What Is The Best Wood Pencil?

Postby mrcadmin1 » Wed Jun 18, 2008 11:04 pm

I like a Forest Choicethe best, it is genuine cedar with a good pink pearl eraser. Here is a link to a review of a Forest Choice pencil: http://www.pencilrevolution.com/2005/08 ... e-pencils/. They are expensive but if you buy a pack of 144 on eBay, you can get them for less than 30 cents per pencil (including delivery). Let me know if you find them cheaper somewhere else. I also like a Mirado Black Warrior (by Papermate). Dixons are supposed to be good but I haven't had good luck with them. Any other opinions?

The best place that I have found to buy Forest Choice pencils is....drum roll...http://www.forestchoice.com/. The price as of August 1, 2009 is $21.45 for 144 pencils with shipping to Oneonta, Alabama of $7.38 = $28.83 total for a delivered cost per pencil of 20 cents per pencil. This is a good price for a premium pencil. What other item can you afford to buy "the best of"? I would have liked to purchase 144 Mirado Black Warriors but I can't find a price per 144, only a price per 12, and buying 12 boxes of 12 at the best online price I found of around $2 per box puts them at $24 before shipping. I like the Forest Choice as much as the Black Warrior except the Black Warrior may write a touch darker which I do prefer. But not enough to spend at least $10 more for a gross (gross = 144).

On the other hand, the Forest Choice are hexagonal shaped which means they won't roll off the desk as easily as the Black Warriors. if you haven't figured it out, Forest Choice and Black Warrior are my favorites.

The Forest Choice web site at http://www.forestchoice.com/ has a nice tutorial about how the pencils are made. You can even buy a poster that shows the steps in the manufacture of the pencils that includes pencils at various stages of being made. Very cool.
